The gate of Hrvatski Zagorje

City of Oroslavje It is located 36 km north of Zagreb, in the southern part of Hrvatski Zagorje.

The name Oroslavja is most often associated with the name of the eagle bird - a symbol of strength and freedom, but it still remains unknown.

The name is still closest to the name of the eagle bird, which is a symbol in the coat of arms of the counts Vojkffy, and an obelisk with an eagle sculpture adorned the courtyard of the Sermage castle. A replica of that sculpture is today in Oro square.

The past of Oroslavje is inextricably linked to the past two Oroslav castles and several noble families, which belonged to their owners and which left a deep mark on the history of Oroslavl. These are first of all the Vojković-Vojkffy, Čikulini and Sermage families. The entire economic, social, political and social life of Oroslavje took place around the two castles until the beginning of the 20th century. Today, unfortunately, only one castle remains, Oroslavje Donje, once owned by the Vojković-Vojkffy family, while the other, Oroslavje Gornje, burned down in 1949.

There are very few examples of two castles being built on such a small area at different times and owned by different people, such as the case of the town of Oroslavje. Baroque portals at the entrance to the palace parks Donji and Gornji Oroslavje they are only 300 meters away and are the endpoints of today's inner city center.

Around the castle, in the 18th century, luxurious gardens were arranged, which in terms of stylistic features followed the most famous European gardens of that time, especially the one in Versailles.

The beauty of the meadows and castles drove the great Hungarian composer Franza Liszta that on two occasions in 1846 he stayed in Oroslavje and held a concert there for the local audience. The castles of Oroslavl and the beauty of its gardens pushed famous painters and writers to seek inspiration for their works here. They are among them Vlaho Bukovac, Bela Čikoš Sesija, August Šenoa, Janko Matko i dr.
