Rastoke, the miller's pearl of the Slunj region, was created by the play of nature where the green-blue river Slunjčica flows over travertine rocks into the river Korana, creating a multitude of waterfalls, rapids, small lakes and cascades.
For thousands of years, the rivers Korana and Slunjčica resisted the laws of nature, and as a result of that struggle in the limestone plateau carved an immense natural wealth for man. It was on this undeveloped terrain, with elevations in the form of watercourses and waterfalls, that man built the settlement of Rastoke.
According to records, the settlement of ambient value and authentic architectural heritage dates back to the 17th century, but it is believed to have existed earlier as well.
Rastoke, among other things, testify to the impressive harmony of nature and human achievements, where water power was used as the main and only driver of the mills. It is the first time that primitive machines are not powered by human or animal power. In addition to grinding grain, water power was also used for washing clothes. Long before the invention of the washing machine, laundry in Rastoki was "washed" in baskets next to the mills. The baskets were deep wooden barrels with holes drilled in them, in which the water was turned over and over until the laundry was completely clean.
The largest number of dwellings were built at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, and because of their exceptional natural beauty and historical tradition, Rastoke was included in the list of the State Administration for the Protection of Cultural and Historical Heritage in 1962. At that time, there were 22 mills, 4 cloth mills, 7 baskets for washing plants and irises, and 28 houses with associated outbuildings in Rastoki.
Because of the harmonious architectural, historical and ethnographic heritage, Rastok was included in the Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments at the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Zagreb in 1969.
